ID News: IDSA Proposes New Guidelines to Expedite New Antibiotic Development

Infectious Diseases Society of America has announced a proposal to a congressional subcommittee that may result in incentives to antibiotic drug developers to get new agents approved more quickly.  Such incentives may help stem one of the world’s greatest public health threats, antimicrobial resistance, by reducing the economic, scientific, and regulatory barriers that have hindered discovery and development of new antibiotics to effectively treat infections caused by resistance organisms.  The proposal outlines the involvement of targeted patient populations in clinical trials for new drug development, resulting in the need to enroll fewer patients, saving time and costs, and ultimately getting these much needed new antibiotics on the market.  Trana Discovery strongly supports these types of incentives that renew interest in antibiotic drug discovery and development.
