Precision Medicine vs Antibiotic Resistance

 In News

The director of Spain’s National Center for Microbiology, Jesús Oteo Iglesias, MD, PhD, spoke recently at the Spanish Association of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology conference to alert the participants of evolving methods for treating patients with infectious diseases.  His point overall was that there is potential for individualizing patient care similar to the methods employed by oncologists.  This is difficult in infectious diseases due in part to the diversity of microorganisms & resistance patterns, the patient’s general health, immune system status and the interaction with the microbiota.  Dr. Oteo highlighted those advances in genomics could aid in personalizing care.

We at Trana Discovery applaud Dr. Oteo’s ideas and we have used genomics to identify essential tRNA that must be used by specific bacteria & fungi thereby slowing resistance acquisition due to a necessary genomic disruption.  In identifying inhibitors of these critical tRNA, selective and specific care can be employed with each patient.  Thus sparing the microbiome, and avoiding common resistance mechanisms now recognized.
